Second Annual Plane Pull to Support Local Youth Mentoring Slated for May in Auburn

AUBURN – Local businesses and organizations are lining up to see who can pull off a 20-foot CRJ-200 jet as quickly as possible, all to raise vital funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentorship programs from central Maine.

The second annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine Plane Pull, hosted by Elite Airways, will take place Saturday, May 14, beginning at 10 a.m. at Auburn-Lewiston Airport, located at 80 Airport Drive in Auburn. Jason Levesque, Mayor of Auburn, will co-host the event with the event’s media sponsor, WGME athletic director David Eid.

Sponsoring organizations form teams of 8-10 people to compete for the fastest draw times. Independent teams can participate by fundraising a minimum of $500 per team entry. A trophy will be awarded to the team with the fastest pull time, along with prizes for top fundraisers. The event is expected to host more than 20 teams with the goal of raising $40,000 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentorship programs.

According to BBBSMM Executive Director Gwendolyn Hudson, this year’s Plane Pull funding comes at a critical time.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on local children, who remain the most vulnerable and impacted in our communities,” Hudson said in a BBBSMM press release. “Children, especially now, benefit from positive, consistent and reliable relationships provided by caring mentors. Over 100 children are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. Funding for the Plane Pull event will help create these essential, individual friendships that change lives for the better. According to Elite Airways, which is hosting the event for a second year at Auburn-Lewiston Airport, the partnership with Mid-Maine’s BBBS is part of its commitment to serving the community.

“We are proud to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine to bring businesses and community members together to positively impact the well-being of local children,” said John Pearsall, president of ‘Elite Airways. “Supporting the potential of every child is an important investment in our future and we are delighted to be hosting this event again.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event and cheer on their teams, including the Big and Little games, which will be treated to airport tours after the event.

BBBS of Mid-Maine will host a second Plane Pull in the fall, hosted by C&L Aviation Group and Bangor International Airport, on September 10 in Bangor.
