Ruth’s Cottage, Paticake House offers free child abuse training for victims and educators

TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) – Ruth’s Cottage and The Patticake House are offering free child sexual abuse training called “From Darkness to Light.” This training is for anyone who has been victimized by this act, as well as educators in Southwest Georgia.

Alicia Lewis of WALB spoke with General Manager Nancy Bryan of The Paticake House about how you can get involved.

They offer these courses in the administration building, as well as on-site training, where they will educate in a group setting. Bryan says this training is offered nationwide, but people usually have to pay for it.

She says the goal is to find 1,300 people to train. So far they are at a total of 600 adults.

“And that mostly comes from the school systems where we were training 2 to 300 people at a time down to a class, I had this week that was one person. We consider that training so valuable that regardless of whether it’s one or two or 200 people, we want to train as many adults as possible in this education,” Bryan said.

This training has become so popular and effective because it is video led. The people in the video are adult survivors of child sexual abuse. They tell how it happened to them and how they recovered.

“And then there’s a variety of experts talking about ways people can prevent child abuse in their facilities in church organizations and also educating what I want to do if you suspect child abuse.”

Bryan says child abuse isn’t always obvious. She says children will give you clues and it’s up to adults to recognize those signs.

“The best help against child sexual abuse an adult can have is to have a good relationship with your children to be very open so they know they can talk to you about anything,” added Brian.

In-house training is offered twice a month for the rest of the year. She says to check PattieCake House Social Media Pages for other programming arrangements.
