A female doctor from the Irrua University Hospital arrested for beating a maid
Chiamaka Ogbonnaya, a physician and pediatrician at Irrua Teaching Specialty Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Edo State, is being held at Benin City State Police Command, on allegations of assault and beatings. wounds against her maid simply identified as Comfort. The victim is believed to be a junior high school student, JSS 2.
Dr Ogbonnaya was accused of frequent brutalization of the maid using a mop stick, wooden turner, cane and any other object within reach on her including her ribcage , and then sent her out of the house. It was also alleged that she liked to give him a small amount of raw rice as food for a week.
Confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Chidi Nwabuzor said: “Dr. Ogbonnaya Chiamaka from Irrua Specialty University Hospital was actually arrested by Irrua Division for the alleged offense of child abuse and battery, and currently the case is under investigation. investigation by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the investigation; i.e. SCID, and further developments will be made known to the public.
Reacting to the incident, the state education commissioner, Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, said she would respond appropriately once she received the full report of the case.
Warning that there is zero tolerance for child abuse in Edo State, Oviawe asserted that “At the Ministry of Education, we take the welfare of all our pupils and students very seriously. There is the Child Rights Act which provides all sorts of penalties, including prison terms, for adults who abuse children.
