Madurai: Almost 1,000 volunteers have been selected for the first phase of the “Illam Thedi Kalvi” program in Madurai. The volunteers have gone through a two-day training program and will now start classes for school students on a pilot basis.
“The selection of volunteers continues to be ongoing and is based on their performance on aptitude tests, psychometric tests and school management committee (CGS) approval. Preference is given to female volunteers. The training program is not only aimed at teaching the methodology, but also motivating the volunteers to engage socially and be sensitized to the objective of the program, ”said N Thirugnanam, additional district program manager, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, Madurai.
S Mahalakshmi, a volunteer who participated in the program held Thursday at Pandian Nedunchezhian Corporation School, said she wanted to start teaching students. “I am a special education teacher and my son is also a special child. Although I have experience with special children, teaching regular school students is new to me. It’s nice to learn something new and use more activity-oriented teaching to keep the kids engaged, ”she said.
Education Ministry officials said classes would likely start after school next week and the program would first be implemented in the slums in the first phase.
Meanwhile, the second phase of the folk artist awareness campaign for the program was reported by Madurai District Director of Education (CEO) R Swaminathan and Kalirajan, member of the program’s state committee.
